Chapter 15

Doreen called a couple of Gina’s girlfriends to come keep Gina company for the afternoon. She was in bad shape, when Doreen dropped Gina off at her home. Doreen promised to call Gina later in the day to ensure she was doing okay. Gina had gotten out of the car and stiffly made her way up to her apartment. Doreen had wondered about staying, but Gina didn’t want anybody here right now; she just wanted to be alone.

Doreen understood that. It was tough enough right now to deal with the confirmation of Oscar’s death just moments ago.

When Doreen got home, she snatched a brownie, needing the sugar hit, and went outside with the animals. She went to the patio beyond the deck and just sat, realizing once again how absolutely lucky she was to have this peace and quiet to come home to. If that had been her down in the morgue, identifying somebody she knew and cared for, there would be very little solace to be found in that place. Even though the news was still so fresh, even being at your own home, with familiar surroundings, would make a difference too.

At least Doreen was willing to try and believe that. She sat here, pushing back the memory of the heartbroken woman’s reaction to seeing her dead loved one. Thankfully Doreen snatched it up before either of them could eat it and could get sick. She was both shocked and laughing by the time she snagged Thaddeus and put him on the table. Thaddeus had beat Goliath to the brownie bit—just short of getting the piece of chocolate. Goliath lost to him by a narrow margin, and he was now lying in the grass, staring at Doreen with disdain.

“Did you do that on purpose?” she scolded him but still with a smile on her face. She almost wanted to reward him for easing up the heaviness of the day. He just flicked his tail at her. She walked into the kitchen, pulled out the animals’ treats and walked back out and gave Goliath one.

Mugs gave her his woebegone expression once more, staring up at her, and she sighed and relented. “Fine, you can have one.” And she headed back inside to where she’d hidden the treats and pulled out one for him. She didn’t dare give him too many, and she had to keep the location still hidden. Now much happier and lighter at heart, she walked down to the river, picked up several sticks and played with Mugs for a good ten minutes. Feeling better, she turned and pondered what to do next.

The question rattling around in her brain really was how would they find out what
